TV Wall Mounts Buying Guide

TV wall mounts have become an essential component of modern home entertainment setups, offering a sleek and space-saving solution to elevate the viewing experience. These mounts not only enhance the aesthetics of a room but also provide flexibility in arranging furniture and optimizing the visual appeal of the television.

Selecting the appropriate TV wall mount is crucial for ensuring both safety and optimal viewing angles. The wrong choice can lead to viewer discomfort, potential damage to the TV and an overall unsatisfactory viewing experience. Installers play an important role in guiding customers through the selection process, taking into account factors like TV size, weight, room layout and personal preferences.

TV Compatibility

When choosing a TV wall mount, you first need to ensure you're selecting a mount that can accommodate the size and weight of the TV. You should consult the UL safety rating of the TV mount, which should be on the mount's box. Make sure to include the weight of the TV mount itself in your calculations for weight capacity, because if the mount you have chosen is only rated to support the weight of the TV, then the mount won't be able to support the total weight of the system.

You also want to ensure that the mount you choose matches up and fits the size of the TV you're installing. For this, you'll want to match the VESA pattern size of the TV with that of the TV mount. VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) mounting patterns refer to the standardized layout of mounting holes on the back of the TV. Understanding and matching these patterns with the mount ensures compatibility. This standardization also facilitates easy interchangeability of mounts and TVs, providing flexibility for upgrades or replacements.

Types of TV Wall Mounts

Fixed wall mounts

For dedicated viewing areas with minimal glare concerns, fixed mounts offer rock-solid stability and a simple solution that is straightforward. This is a good choice if viewers will be sitting directly in front of the TV, and if you can position the TV at the ideal desired height. Most of these types of mounts will hold the TV about an inch or two from the wall. However, some low-profile models can hold the TV almost flush to the wall.

Uses and applications:

Dedicated viewing areas | Rooms with minimal glare concerns | Areas where the user doesn't need the viewing angle to change

Tilting wall mounts

Tilting wall mounts allow vertical angle adjustments, enabling users to tilt the TV up or down. This feature is beneficial for reducing glare and optimizing the viewing experience. This type of mount can also be a good option for areas where the TV needs to be mounted higher on the wall. Possibly above a fireplace, for example, where the screen would need to be angled down for better viewing. Being able to adjust the angle can also help reduce screen reflection from windows or bright room lights.

Uses and applications:

For reducing glare | Mounting TVs above eye level | Installing above a fireplace

Full-motion wall mounts

Full-motion wall mounts, also called articulating mounts or pivoting mounts provide a wider range of motion, allowing the TV to swivel and tilt. This option is great for rooms with large or off-center seating areas or where seating arrangements tend to shift. The flexibility in movement allows for multiple viewing angles. Although there is a large assortment of models available with varying ranges of movement, most models allow the TV to pull out and retract from the wall, tilt up and down, swivel, and pan left to right. Some models are also designed specifically for mounting over a fireplace.

Uses and applications:

Multiple viewing angles | Corner installations | Areas where interchangeable seating is common

Ceiling TV mounts

Ceiling mounts suspend the TV from the ceiling, providing a unique and practical solution for unconventional room layouts or scenarios where wall mounting is not possible or desired. Most ceiling mounts offer one or more adjustments for height, tilt or swivel. There are also fixed models for installation scenarios where a stationary screen is acceptable or required.

Unique room layouts | Installations where wall mounting is not possible | Commercial or outdoor spaces

Recessed wall mounts

Recessed mounts are designed for in-wall installations, providing an ultra-clean, low-profile appearance. These mounts are an excellent choice for those who prioritize aesthetics and want to integrate the TV seamlessly into the room. Recessed TV mounts allow the TV to sit nearly flush with the wall, which could also help maximize floor space in smaller rooms. Some models feature backboxes that conceal mounting hardware when the TV is retracted.
