Types of Patch Cables for Commercial AV Needs

The most common types of patch cords used in commercial AV are Cat 6 patch cables and Cat 6A patch cables. These straight-through cables support up to 10 Gbps speed and have an RJ45 connector at each end, which allows installers to quickly add or remove devices from a network or AV system.

In an AVoIP installation, network patch cables typically connect IP encoders, switches and decoders over short distances. The AV source signal (such as HDMI) is encoded so that it can be transmitted over the IP network, then decoded to match output requirements (such as HDMI). This eliminates the need for separate AV infrastructure and allows for signal transmission over longer distances.

Fiber patch cables are also useful in commercial AV applications, especially within large networks where fiber optic cable is required for longer cable runs. Fiber patch cables can support higher bandwidths over longer distances and typically feature LC connectors.
